Obituary of Matilda Ann Wise

On February 25, 2017, Matilda "Ann" Wise passed away peacefully at her Boulder Creek home with her husband of 50 years, Charles Dacres Wise by her side. Ann was born in Tulare, CA to Esther Ellen Compton and Halver James Haddock. She was the eldest of their five daughters, Margaret, Mildred, Mary, and Marie. As a child, Ann became actively involved in 4-H, reaching the rank of All-Star and State Leadership Winner. In 1962, Ann earned a bachelor's degree in Home Economics from U.C. Davis, and completed her Master of Arts in Child Development and Family Relations from San Jose State University in 1968. Upon her graduation from SJSU, she took a job as Home Economist for the University of California Agricultural Extension Service. While in San Jose, Ann met her husband, Charles Dacres Wise. Ann and Charles were married on October 16, 1966 and moved Boulder Creek CA to start their new life together. Ann's life was devoted to the care of her beloved family, Charles Edward Wise, Richard and Cheryl Ann Matys (Wise), and grandchildren Charles Andrew Wise, Catherine Michele Wise, and Ashley Ann Matys. Ann's other enduring passions included improving the lives of others in her community through service in education and the arts. In addition to starting two preschools in the San Lorenzo Valley, Ann served on the boards of the San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District for over 17 years, the League of Women Voters, the Cultural Council, and was an incorporating board member of the Santa Cruz Mountain Arts Center. A celebration of Ann's life will be held on Sunday, March 26th at the Boulder Creek Fire Hall (13230 Central Ave, Boulder Creek CA) from 2:00p.m. to 5:00p.m. BBQ will be provided, please bring a side dish and/or warm memories of Ann to share. In lieu of flowers, a scholarship fund has been established in Ann's name to further the educational pursuits of SLV students pursuing coursework in early childhood education.
