Obituary of Jeffrey Robert Squires

Jeffrey R. Squires passed away at his home surrounded by his children. Jeff was born in Oakland Ca. to Ike and Florence Squires. His family moved to southern CA where he graduated from San Fernando Valley High. He married his high school sweetheart; they had two sons Randell and Terry Squires and one daughter Sherri (Squires) VanDrepen. He joined the Los Angeles Police Dept. He was a mounted officer for the dept., a detective and retired after 20 years in 1964. After retiring he moved to Lake County bought a motel and joined the Lake County District Attorney's office as an investigator. In 1967 he met Mildred (Smith) Squires and after the two were married he moved to her home in Aptos Ca. Where he became Dad to her children, Muriel Ellis of Kilmacolm Scotland, Dona Hagedorn of Reno NV, Pam (Smith) St. Martin of Willits Ca, Joseph Smith (proceeded in death 2006) James C Smith of Hollister Ca, and Normajean Clapper of Riverbank CA. He loved and enjoyed his family. He leaves behind many grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was the perfect example of "Step-Dad" all should be as lucky as we were being raised by him. In 1968 he joined the Santa Cruz Sheriff dept. he was assigned as a bailiff in the Superior Court and retired in 1985. He believed in helping others and doing your civil duties, he was always volunteering and belonged to many service clubs though out his life. Serving 15 years on the Santa Cruz mounted Sheriff's Posse. He volunteer on the Aptos High Booster club, served his local church St. Andrews where he was needed, and in 1986 he became a marshal/ambassador and played golf every week up until his illness kept him off the greens. He also became a Sheriff's Volunteer, he and two others opened the first Sheriffs Service Center in Aptos. In the 30 years of volunteering for the Santa Cruz Sheriff's dept, in the many different capacities, he served under 5 different Sheriffs. In 1967 he joined the Cabrillo Lions Club, he was president of the club, he wore many hats though the years and became a lifetime member was recognized as an outstanding member, he was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellowship award for his many years of services and dedication to the club. He continued to make the occasional meeting up until his death. Many will remember his laugh, his smile and his willingness to jump in and help. He loved his dog Herbie and continued to walk him up until the end. A Celebration of Jeff's life will take place at 2pm Sunday April 12th at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, 9850 Monroe Ave., Aptos Ca. 95003 In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Teen Kitchen Project P.O.
