Obituary of Carl K. Hart

Carl Hart passed away on Friday, October 18th at the age of 89. He leaves his wife of 53 years, Gladys, and four children. Carl was born and raised in Santa Cruz. During World War II, he was in the Coast Guard and assigned to the Santa Cruz Wharf, his father having passed away and his two brothers were fighting overseas. He can be seen in some vintage film rowing around the Wharf. Later he was a fireman at Fire Station No. 2 and also worked as a glazier for Santa Cruz Glass. Carl was a true craftsman, able to create amazing things out of his home shop. He was able to purchase the same lathe he worked on in shop class at Santa Cruz High, which he used to create furniture, telescopes, cannons, clocks and numerous other things. He made several bentwood rowboats and would row them out of the harbor. He also built several homes in town, including the family home. Carl was a regular at the flea market for many years until his health prevented his attending. Carl was predeceased by his brother, Arthur Bell; his sister, Catherine Bell; and his dog, Buddy. He is survived by his wife Gladys; his brother, Bill Hart (June); his three daughters, Carol Blute (Ray), Debora Barnett, and Sara Mikles (Joe); and his one son, David Hart (Barbara). He is also survived by eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and one great-great granddaughter on the way. The family would like to thank Heartland Hospice and the staff of Maple House II for their excellent care. Services were private.
