Agnes Kathryn Hill Subbiondo

Obituary of Agnes Kathryn Hill Subbiondo

Agnes Kathryn Hill Subbiondo passed away peacefully in her favorite chair at her home on Sunday, January 16th at 5 PM. A resident of Santa Cruz since the 1970s, Agnes led a full life. At the tender age of 21, Aggie, as she was affectionately known, left her hometown of Philadelphia and moved to California where she met her former husband Joseph Subbiondo. A strong woman of her era, she worked for Philadelphia Electric Company, was an administrative assistant to former Senator Larry Caughlin of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, and worked in the legal department for 20th Century Fox; all before the age of 25. She owned a ranch with a boarding facility that maintained 25 horses in its heyday. However, her most notable career was in real estate where she worked at Thunderbird Real Estate, then at First American Title Company, and finally in wholesale lending for a variety of companies for the remainder of her career. To this day, those in the field know her name, and many a homeowner can tell a story of how Aggie got them their first home. Agnes was an amazing mother who taught her children the value of hard work and dedication. As a single mother, in the mid -70s, she showed her children that no goal was out of reach. She loved to dance and talk on the phone. Anyone who knew her well knew that she was the life of any party; for this, she will be missed the most. Her sense of humor and quick wit made her a favorite of many. She is survived by her children, Joseph and Sara; her grandchildren, Chessa, Nathan, Andrew and Charlotte; her siblings, Rita Haney, Susan Browne, Frances Ipolitti and George Hill; former husband, Joseph Subbiondo; her dog; Katie; and many community members throughout the area who saw her through countless medical appointments, dinners at Jeffrey’s and “Cocktail Hour” on “Oleander Lane.” Mom, no one can take your place and we miss you more than words can express. Your wisdom and late night calls helped us all through some of our darkest moments. You were our rock, our home base, and the foundation of so many dreams realized. Enjoy the party, and save a dance for us. A mass will be held in Aggies honor on Friday, April 8th at 2:00 PM at Saint Joseph's Church followed by a Celebration of Life on April 9th.
