Obituary of Lydia Alice "Marty" Barreras

Lydia Alice “Marty” Barreras passed away on Thursday, September 2, 2021. She was born in Redlands, California; daughter to Susana and Thomas Viramontes. Her family later moved to San Jose and she graduated from James Lick High School in 1954. She was proud of the fact that she was in the first graduating class to attend all four years. Lydia met Jesse at a dance studio while taking dance lessons. She worked for Bell Telephone as an operator for a short time and she was also a secretary. In 1961, after the birth of her second child, she became a full-time homemaker, eventually raising her 4 children. Lydia and Jesse would have shared 63 years of marriage this October 11. She touched many lives with her sense of humor, wonderful - sometimes gourmet - cooking and amazing sense of style. Lydia loved to dance. She and Jesse joined a square-dancing group with friends and even preformed at Great America in Santa Clara. She loved painting, collecting antiques and dolls, and crocheted many beautiful afghans and other gifts for family and friends. Lydia always had a flare for decorating the house for all holidays, especially Christmas. Lydia belonged to Beta Sigma Phi, a cultural & philanthropic women's organization, for greater than 25 years. Lydia is survived by her loving husband Jesse; children Dave (Lisa) of San Jose, Suzanne Buse (Paul) of Santa Cruz, Sandy Burton (Dan) of San Jose and Jess (Miriam) of Soledad; and five grandchildren, Lydia, Wren, Christian, Michael and Julia. She is also survived by her sisters Ruby, Sylvia, Diana and Sheila. Services will be held Friday, September 10th at Resurrection Catholic Community Church,7600 Soquel Drive, Aptos. Viewing, at the church, will be from 10:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. with the Mass beginning at 11:00 a.m. A reception, at the Church Hall will immediately follow Mass.
