Dear Family,
The last few years Al had his shop, Santa Cruz Iron Works, on Pacific Avenue, I was a frequent visitor during my lunch hour. Al and I would talk a little shop ( I am a hobby blacksmith ) and often a little politics. Al was an amazing craftsman in his field. When he closed the shop, I ended up buying most of his tools and stock ( a tough guy to bargain with as well ). Al has always stood out to me as a kind of role model of how one should age..I was in my early forties at the time and All was about 70. There was no sign of aging in Al's mind, he was a modern thinker with a very open attitude and flexible mind....very empathetic to all people..I was a little astonished at the time, as I had been encountering so many locals who had seen the town expand rapidly and could not adjust to it.
If any of you have inherited Al's attitude you are blessed.

Dear Family,
I've known Al for many years and helped him sell his shop on Pacific Ave. What a move that was with all the years of his art work. I would visit him at the hospital over the last few years through pastoral care. And we talked about bringing out the old Santa Clause for the Christmas holidays and never did. It would be neat to get Santa moving again and display him as a memorial for Al. I would love to work on that idea. I will try to make it to the service. And I would love to get a peice of his garden work for Shaffer park a memorial for my family and friends. My dad Lee was a friend of Al too.

My family moved into the home across from Al and Tilly's home in 1982 and we lived there until 1988. It was a quiet neighborhood until we arrived with our two small children. My first encounter with them was when my oven wasn't working and I needed to bake a birthday cake. Tilly generously allowed me to use hers. I have fond memories of both Al and Tilly and remember the beautiful ironwork that adorned their home. Rest in Peace Al.
Fondly,
Joell Mower
