Dorothy Hurley February 25, 1930 - June 4, 2018 Resident of Aptos It is with great sadness we say Dorothy Hurley of Aptos, unexpectedly passed away Monday, June 4, 2018 at the age of 88. She fought many medical battles and was able to beat the odds over many years. A very strong woman to the end. She is preceded in death by her husband, Robert J. Hurley. She has two daughters, Gretchen Hurley and Denyse Hurley; a beloved grandson, Cody Goldsmith of Aptos; and a son-in-law, Mike Goldsmith. She was born in Boston. Her mother passed away when she was 13. Her father told her she couldn't get married until she graduated from college. So, the day after she graduated from Tuft's University, she was married. She lived in San Diego, Coconut Grove, Fla., Paris, France and ended up in Aptos with her family in 1972. She was a devoted stay at home mother and wife. Her brightest day was when her grandson, Cody was born. She was able to live right next door to him from the time he was 2 years old and was a part of his daily life. She went to every single baseball and basketball game as his biggest and loudest fan. Dorothy was a volunteer for the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Department for many years. She won multiple awards for her work in following up with missing persons cases and for the huge amount of volunteer hours she devoted. She was well known and loved by the Santa Cruz Sheriff's community. She loved to dance and was very active in west coast swing, square dancing and line dancing. She taught line dancing to a yoga class every week. She was also very active in the Cactus and Succulent Society and won numerous awards for her beautiful plants. Dorothy had a great love of everything outdoors. This ranged from animals, fishing and gardening. This was a love she passed on to her family. There is a hole in our heart without her.
