Obituary of Shirley Helen Ashworth

Shirley Helen Ashworth (Steen) was born in Harte Michigan, and passed away on April 28th in Santa Cruz California after a brief illness. Born to parents Ernest and Gertrude Steen, she was the youngest daughter of three girls, Margaret Steen Hodgins, and Ruth Steen Raulins. Shirley also had two Step-Brothers, Norman Eader and Douglas Eader. Shirley graduated from High School in Shelby Michigan, and then went on to attend Michigan State University. She moved to California in 1960, where she settled in Aptos to raise her children, Diane and John.
In 1965 she remarried Gordon Ashworth, and became a loving step-mom to Alisa and Michael.
She loved attending all of her children's events, and nothing made her prouder than when her kids succeeded in their life goals.
She and Gordon were avid 49er fans, and they held season tickets for over 40 years . Shirley attended the final game at Candlestick, and cheered with the passion of a loyal fan.
Shirley was a woman who embraced life with both poise and perseverance, gracefully accepting what life offered her at every stage. She had a natural positive nature, which made her a joy to be around. Many people have been touched by her sweet spirit. Her unwavering Faith in a Loving God created the foundation of her Life. Her servants heart found a home at her church St. Andrew Presbyterian in Aptos, where she faithfully served as a Deacon, sang in the choir, and was known for regularly bringing beautiful flower arrangements to her congregation .
After her retirement from Dominican Hospital MRI center she became part of the local chapter of the PEO sisterhood, and was an Executive Board member for several years. Her love for education for women showed in her diligent work with this organization.
Above all else, her family was her passion, she went by many names; Shirley, Shirl, Mom, Grandma, Mamama, and most recently, GiGi. She demonstrated her adoration for us all by picking out the best cards for every occasion, or writing poetry for all of our weddings, graduations and births. She took every opportunity to tell us how much she loved us, and, she never missed the chance to dance.
She was proceeded in death by Gordon in 2002. Shirley will always be in the hearts of her children, Diane (Larry)Ruby, John(Denise)Kuehl, Alisa(Rick)Kincade, and Michael Ashworth. She will also be forever loved by her six Grandchildren; Jason (Fawn), Amy (Shaun), Aaron (Lauren), Rachel (Zeek), Emma, and Josh, and her four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Shirley will be at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church 9850 Monroe Ave, Aptos, CA 95003 on Saturday, May 27th at 1:00. Memorial donations can be made to St. Andrew Presbyterian Church.
