Obituary of Bette Louise Kirby

Bette Kirby died peacefully on March 17, 2017 surrounded by the love of her family. She was 88 years old. Bette was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, on September 24, 1928 to Louis Smith and Alice (Smith) Fry. She graduated from Oakland Technical High School in Oakland and attended the University of CA, Berkley. She was married to (Martin) Ray Kirby on December 13, 1948 in Oakland. The couple made their home in Santa Cruz. She was a homemaker and raised five children. Bette was a devoted mother and grandmother. She volunteered for many of the children's activities, enjoyed reading mysteries, bowling in her league, her weekly visits to Barbara's Hair Styles Unlimited, traveling, gardening and sports, especially watching the San Francisco Giants. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Devoted, independent, kind and determined are just a few of the admired characteristics of Bette. She has touched so many people's lives, and the friendship that she extended to others is a blessing to all who knew her. Bette was most proud of her children and grandchildren. Bette is survived by her two brothers, Sonny Fry (Jenny) of Atwater, CA and Earl Fry (Elaine) of Salt Lake City, Utah. She is also survived by sons, Don Kirby (Pam) of Kona, Hawaii, Wayne Kirby (Valerie) of Santa Cruz; daughters, Sally Sanford (Don) of Los Gatos, Susan Rozario (Rick) of Scotts Valley and Marilou Pinheiro (Tom Hewitt) of Santa Cruz; nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by husband, (Martin) Ray Kirby; sister, Joanne McMahon (Bill); and grandsons, Matt Kirby and Luke Kirby. At Bette's request no services will be held. Donations may be made to Hospice of Santa Cruz County or your favorite charity.
