Obituary of Marilyn C. Mitchell

Please share a memory of Marilyn to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Marilyn was born in Oakland, CA on May 1, 1923 to Robert and Mary Hunter. She died on March 1, 2017 in Oakland. Marilyn was a life long resident of Oakland, graduating from Fremont High School in 1941. She married William P. Mitchell on June 28, 1946. She is survived by her daughter, Janice (Robert) ten Bosch of Newark California, William (Janet) Mitchell of Tucson, AZ and grandchildren, Kristen (Clinton) Coddington of Nayarit, Mexico, Kara Schmitt of Santa Cruz, CA, Will Mitchell of Biloxi, MS, Alex Mitchell of Tucson, AZ and Nick Mitchell of Tacoma, WA and 4 great-grandchildren, Grace, Claire and Clinton Coddington, and Nathan Fleming. Marilyn was a loving mother and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Charles Hunter, her husband, William, and her loving companion, Ed. Marilyn worked 45 years for the Oakland Public Schools as a secretary at Stonehurst Elementary, Bella Vista Elementary, and Carl B. Munck Elementary Schools. To know Marilyn was to know a friendly, outgoing, positive lady who loved to laugh. She enjoyed life to the fullest; tennis, golfing, walking with various groups, and traveling with the CRS Travelers. Keys to her longevity were finding humor in ordinary events and her philosophy, which she shared with her children and grandchildren, "When life hands you a lemon, make lemonade out of it!" Marilyn was fortunate to enjoy a second love later in her life, spending several years with Edward Cockrum on cruises, yearly trips to Hawaii, and monthly trips to Timber Cove. A memorial will be held for family and friends at the end of April. Please honor Marilyn by donating to Children's Hospital, Oakland, CA.
