Obituary of Kevin Garretty

Kevin Garretty passed away peacefully at home Saturday morning. His wife of 37 years, Sandra Garretty, his son Sean Garretty and Sean's fiancé, Coral were all by his side. He chose to be among those he loved the most in his final moments. He was born to the late Gertrude and George Garretty in Santa Cruz. He has a half brother, Keith, living in Oregon. Kevin is survived by his wife Sandra Garretty, his son Sean Garretty, as well as two nieces and many grand nieces and nephews living in Santa Cruz. His brother and sister in law, Chris and Pat Spooner, live in Felton and will miss their monthly dinner where they sample new wine. His nieces, Jennifer Brenchley and Katherine Horton, could always count on his help and advice. His willingness to take midnight phone calls will not be forgotten. His multiple grand nieces and nephews, Savannah and Sophia Horton, Marissa, Melanie, Matt and Charlie Brenchley loved their uncle and appreciated all his knowledge. Kevin will be missed greatly. Kevin was a pharmacist for Longs Drugs for 40 years and retired in 2011. He attended Creighton University in Omaha Nebraska where he earned his degree in pharmacology. Family could count on Kevin for advice day and night regarding their medications. He was always willing to help if someone needed advice. Kevin and his family spent many years at the archery range perfecting their skills. Kevin enjoyed vacations and long weekends with his wife where they visited Alaska and Greece. They would head towards Grass Valley where they would visit family and spend time in book stores and bakeries. There was always a winery to visit and new wines to taste. On a typical day, Kevin could be found reading a novel or watching new and old movies he collected over the years. Another pastime he enjoyed was playing cards and chess. Kevin was a self taught investor and was very good at managing finances. He could answer any question about movies with confidence and he was always right. Kevin loved his family the most and enjoyed spending afternoons drinking wine with his extended family at BBQ's. He enjoyed movies with his wife and getting together with family and friends for dinner. He enjoyed trying new restaurants with his dinner group as well as visiting wineries with his family and friends. Kevin and Sandy would visit Morro Bay to see their son for a long weekend. Kevin was very proud of his son's accomplishments. In lieu of flowers, the family requests for you to purchase a bottle of wine and toast to Kevin's love of life and good wine.
