Obituary of John Albert Marlo

Services will be Monday, June 1st for John Albert Marlo who passed away on Tuesday, May 26, 2015. John was born in San Francisco, on May 9, 1934 to John Marlo and Francis Bouchine and raised by Aunt Esther Marlo. John went to St. Josephs Elementary and Alameda High School. He then attended San Jose College where he met and upon graduation married his wife of 58 years, Patricia Alyson Nock. John served in the United States Army as a Second Lieutenant and then became a policeman for the San Jose Police Department and worked on the force while he attended University of Santa Clara College of Law. After law school, he moved his family to Santa Cruz in 1961. John became a trial attorney and joined the Law office of Snider, Marlo, McPhail and Hall, specializing in Municipal law. In 1968, he was the city attorney for Capitola and taught Administrative Justice at Cabrillo College for 18 years. Judge Marlo co-authored the textbook "The Police Officer and Criminal Justice" and authored "Famous Quotations Illustrated for Children". John Marlo was appointed to the Municipal Court by Governor Ronald Regan in 1973 where he served with dedication and a sincere bond to the community and his staff. During this time, John and Patti started Aptos Vineyards, involving their 5 children to grow the Pinot Noir grapes. He also lectured internationally on wine. In 1987 he was elected to the Superior Court and served 3 terms, continuing his devotion to resolving conflict and reducing crime. When Judge Marlo retired from the bench, he went to work for the Judicial Arbitration and Mediation Service (JAMS), and successfully mediated and arbitrated for 20 years. He never retired. John was an involved Catholic and enjoyed his morning prayer groups. His love of Jazz, history, viticulture, art and books will always be remembered. Above all, John Marlo was a dedicated and loving husband and father-instilling honor and integrity to his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is survived by: wife Patti, daughters Kimber Collins, (Joseph), Kamala Davis (Kyle), Sons Craig Marlo (Kathleen), Jock Marlo (Giselle) and Daughter, Bridgit Karo (Marc). He has a legacy of 9 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, June 1st, 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 435 Monterey Ave., Capitola. Visitation for family and friends will be held at the Church prior to the Mass from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
