Obituary of Armand E. Bussone

Armand Bussone passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully in his sleep, on March 12, 2015. He was 89 years old. Armand was born at home in San Jose and raised in Saratoga at Paul Masson Winery, now known as The Mountain Winery. His father was wine master and vintner for Paul Masson and winemaking ran in the family. Armand began college at San Jose State University but only attended a few semesters before being drafted into the Army during WWII. He served as company clerk for the 806 Tank Destroyer Battalion and was on his way to Japan when the war ended. He returned home to San Jose, and following the family business, began working for Almaden Vineyards where he started in the cellar and eventually became wine master. In 1974, Armand transitioned to Geyser Peak Winery in Sonoma County where he remained wine master and vice president until his retirement in 1991. Throughout his life, Armand loved the ocean and true to his wishes, he retired to the family home in Santa Cruz. Armand enjoyed his retirement by walking to and from West Cliff Drive, sometimes with Jodie, the family dog; sharing stories about the past - his Italian heritage and music - winery buddies - reunions with WWII friends; having a good glass of red wine; playing bocce; reading a good mystery; going to Gilda's for Thursday night pasta; and sharing time with family and friends. Armand is survived by his wife of 63 years (and 5 years of dating) Agnes, his daughter Fran, son-in-law Lee, grandchildren Alana, Adam and Maria, dog Jodie, many nieces and nephews, cousins and loving family, friends and neighbors. A quiet man, Armand will be truly missed. The family will receive friends on Friday, March 20th from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Santa Cruz Memorial, 1927 Ocean Street Ext., Santa Cruz. A Catholic Mass will be held Saturday, March 21st at 12:30 p.m. at the Oblates of St. Joseph/Shrine of St. Joseph, 544 West Cliff Drive, Santa Cruz, with reception to follow.
