Dear Meek Family,
I just learned of the passing of Artie from another fellow geocacher. I knew him as "Soquel1930" and most of my finds are his caches. I loved his stories on the geocache pages. He reminded me so much of my own father who also was a Navy man. I am praying for your family during this difficult time. The loss of a loved one is so very hard.
Sincerely,
Francine Holland (geocaching name: fgitano)

Artie was such a unique person, helping others and serving his nation. I got to know Artie through the MOAA Newsletter where he highlighted the lives of his fellow MOAA members with such elegance and great prose.
One time in setting next to Artie I mentioned that my father was in Korea about the same time as Artie and he shared with me his memories of that time and their hardships. Through Artie's recollections I gained a better understanding of my own father's life in the Army.
I will miss seeing Artie when I go to the MOAA meeting, but more I will miss listening to his recollections of military life and his columns on helping humanity.
I am sorry I can not attend him memorial service, I will be out of town, however true to Artie it will be short on service and long on friends and family visiting and sharing memories.
Artie will forever be the historic emeritus of the Santa Cruz MOAA Chapter.

Aunt Babe and Family,
I am with you in spirit during this special time. You may count yourselves truly blessed to have shared your lives with such an inspirational person. I have always loved the sound of Uncle Artie's voice because it resonates with love and kind reassurance, and a joy for life. I did not know the depths of his accomplishments, activities, and service until I read his obituary. He is a gentle and humble soul. I am proud to be his niece and look forward to seeing him again, on the other side.

Sending my condolences to the Meek family.
I met Artie through geocaching. I first 'met' Artie through his logging of my caches and of our writing emails back and forth regarding geocaches and geocache related stuff.
But on 6/11/12 I finally got to meet Artie in person!
I knew from his logs that Artie liked to be 'First to find' on geocaches. There had been new caches in San Juan Bautista over the course of a few days and Artie had driven over the hill to try to find them 'first'. Well, on 6/11/12 there was another new cache in SJB (it's GC number is GC3NC0H) and I thought I'd chase that one. I had a 'feeling' that I might meet Artie there and sure enough.....he was already there looking for the cache!
I walked up and introduced myself and thought I'd sign the log after him....but he hadn't found it yet! I picked up an object and it was the cache. Artie said he'd picked up the object before but missed it. He seemed so sad that he wouldn't be the FTFer. But I told him it was a shared FTF and he really lit up after that!! We decided we'd park his truck and cache together for a couple hours. It was really great!!
I would run into Artie at new caches around the area. Always met me with a smile on his face.
Artie also knew from reading my geocaching logs of his caches that I was working on a geocaching streak where I had to find at least one geocache every day. He would put more caches out to help me out on my journey!! Very thoughtful!
I always enjoyed my correspondence with Artie. His geocache logs were always great. And his caches that talked about the area history were second to none. While we met through geocaching.....I considered Artie a friend. Such a nice guy. Always cheerful. Happy to be out and about.
He will be missed by myself and the geocaching community as well.

A little over a year ago, I started Geocaching both at home in Aptos and at work in Monterey. It quickly became obvious that Soquel1930 was a very active cacher. I saw his name everywhere, as a cache hider and finder.
When it came time for me to start hiding caches, I reached out to him for advice on how best to do it. He responded immediately and was very helpful. Even gave me a "favorite" rating on my first cache.
We exchanged emails every few months, but I never met him in person, and that is something I regret. However, I do feel lucky to have interacted with him at all, even if it was only for a short time and only virtually.

Artie, thank you so much for what you have given me through my life with your family. I got a wonderful support friend, you son Kevin since high school and then as a result your wonderful wife Babe, Rodney the gruff, Jeremy the jokster, Karen of Disney fame and of course Kathy my sister/friend. Kevin married Marla 22 years ago and gave me my very special friend/sister. I am proud to say I am the adopted sister #3 and so love your family. Your quiet gentlemanly ways and quick smile was always a joy to see. I always looked forward to seeing you and I again look forward to seeing you in heaven.
As I know you are always in a hurry to get anywhere, I pray you arrival was the true welcome with the love you deserve. Love Debbie

My sincere & heartfelt condolences to the Meek family. I was his training instructor @ UCSC--the one & only prospective driver I shepherded through the process to the end. I was shocked when asked to do it. He was a dream "student" and I remember how proud I was the day he aced his licensing test @ DMV. That day & experience, not the minute details, stand out forever in my mind. I knew of his devotion to his family, but he never told me any of the rest of his life. We either didn't have the opportunity or his humility prevented it or both. I hope to get to the funeral. At the very least though I wanted the family to know how highly he was regarded & what a calming influence he was to us all. May his memory continue to be a blessing in your lives. I know it will be. Warm regards, Sandra L Cohen, Ret. UCSC & resident of Santa Cruz
