Obituary of Mary Alice West

Mary passed away peacefully Saturday evening into the arms of her Heavenly Father. She leaves behind 3 daughters, Kathy West Segna, Carol West Corless and Janice West (Leitch), 2 granddaughters, Yoene Segna Palmer, Sarah Elizabeth Leitch, 4 great grandchildren, Philip, Luke, Joey and Rachel Palmer. Her husband Myron pre-deceased her. Mary was born and raised in Starke, Florida, the daughter of Margaret Louise (Fernandez) and William Elliot Yarbrough. She and her sister Fay attended Montreat High School in North Carolina and were active in many sports and enjoyed the outdoors. She married her beloved husband of 42 years, Myron West, in 1947. They then moved their young family to San Diego, Ca. in 1954. Mary graduated from San Diego State College and began a long career of teaching. In 1961 the family relocated to Los Gatos where she continued teaching 3rd-4th grade students. With retirement in 1985, Mary and Myron moved to Florence, Oregon. Mary was an avid gardener, winning awards for her beautiful Rhododendrons and Azaleas. She was a voracious reader and supported the Florence Library. She was a skilled seamstress and made beautiful quilts to share with family and friends. Mary and Myron loved their community and friends in Florence and were always available to volunteer and help others wherever they were needed. In 2009 Mary moved back to California to be closer to family. Special thanks are given to the staff at De un Amor for their loving care. Mary lived her life with love, generosity, joy, resilience and grace. She had a great heart, a quick wit and loved to laugh. She loved her family, meeting new people, and we all loved her. We will miss her...
