20 years ago we were connected with Phil to help us understand the significance of some strange tools at the wood stove in the house we bought. We had learned they were horse branding irons from the villa de Branciforte. Phil was an expert on the history of the villa, but what I remember most about him is his love of history, willingness to share his information and passion, and that he was such a kind man. Rest in Peace.

I was so lucky to know Phil. He shared with me his knowledge and encouraged my own quest for information. I love to tell the story about when I was researching my house. Phil said to me, "I think I might have a picture of your neighborhood, and maybe your house is in there somewhere." Well, this was the equivalent of the Holy Grail for me since my house was built in 1917. He pulled out the picture and I looked at him in awe... I said, "Phil, this isn't a picture with my house in it...it's a picture OF my house!" There was my house front and center, shortly after it was built. I cherish my copy of this picture and when I see it, I always think fondly of my good friend. Thank you, Phil for everything you did to encourage the historian in me.

Phil was one of the most generous historians, focusing on Santa Cruz County and the underrepresented people that other historians chose not to write about. His writing and research on African Americans, Outlaws, Prostitutes. His "To Know My Name -- A Chronological History of African Americans in Santa Cruz County" is a classic that reflects Phil's attention to detail and accuracy. He leaves a lifetime of writing that could be put together as a "Reader's Reader" for generations to build on. His wit and gracious presence will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him, or those who he has touched by his spirit. Many of his essays (327 items) may be read on the Research Forum website, hosted by the Museum of Art & History:

I will never forget Phil. Just one of the many reasons being a copy of the only known photo of Isaac Graham sits in front of me on the bottom of my hanging copy of an 1881 edition of Arthur A. Taylor's Courier Item newspapers. Phil and me debated about Graham's character often, If he was a "Good, or Bad." man. These discussions NEVER got heated, and always would just end with Phil shaking his head ;-)
One day Phil pulled me aside and handed me my photo of Isaac. I have treasured it ever since.... and I will echo those before me that wrote about Phil's patience with people, and DEEP understanding of Santa Cruz County history. My only regret in knowing him is that I moved away from Santa Cruz in the early 90's and so missed a lot of "Philistory!" Phil once accused me of inventing a word, and so I will stop here having done so. "Thank-You Phil for sharing your life with us." M.F. Kinsella, Victoria, B.C. Canada.

Phil was a wonderful person, always so generous with his time and willing to help others. Among historians of Santa Cruz's past, he was one of the giants. I will always have fond memories of Phil and feel richer for having known him.

The song was called Streamlined Cannonball, a Roy Acuff tune that only a guy like Phil could have found. It was our first recording as The Couriers, done in a tiny studio above a drugstore in Santa Cruz with egg crates on the walls to soak up the sound. In those days, there was no overdubbing, so each take (and we must have done it thirty times) had to be recorded from the beginning. Phil played the banjo, and the three of us (including Dick Yount) sang. Phil was a treasurer chest of unknown folk songs and we recorded more than a few obscure folk tunes he found.
He was such a good guy and I'm sorry that I lost track of him in the ensuing years. I send my love to his family. Thanks for the memories, Phil.
