Dear Norm,
I just had lunch with Karen and Bob S. and they told me about your loss. In the years of my university work, I always enjoyed visiting with Mary Kate, and our last visit was more than two years ago at a Dress shop in Aptos. We shared a few laughs at some of the
available items.
You were one of the three people who wrote me a letter when I left UCSC for Cabrillo, and I will always remember that kindness.
I too have lost my husband and moved back to Santa Cruz. I know the ragged edge on which you walk. I send you--what can I send? So many possible words. My sympathy, worn out though the word seems, will fit for now.
Yours,
Kathy Cowan

It's hard to think that Mary Kate is gone. She was such a presence in the arts community. I served with her on the Cabrillo Music Festival board, and we participated in establishing the McPherson Center. She was a force to be reckoned with. Condolences to those who miss her the most.

I am always surprised to read that my dear MKML had other friends besides us! When we left Santa Cruz in 1962 she vowed she would never let go of our friendship and she never did. Our lives were always entwined with hers and we are heartbroken that she is gone.

MaryKate did, and will continue to, inspire me to live life fully, be a friend to all, and laugh with gusto. Even in death, she inspires me--that's just how I want to go! The next singing bird you see, say hello to MaryKate. She will be with us always.

I first met Mary Kate in Jazzercise class, at the back of room. We formed our dutiful line, and laughed our way through the class while doing our best to keep up with each step and turn. I went to Jazzercise each day to see Mary Kate. As a mother of four boys myself, our bond began with son stories. As I went through law school, each day Mary Kate asked me what classes I was in, how I was doing, and regaled me with wonderful travel stories and the good times she was having. Mary Kate was pure joy, life, laughter and warmth. I wish I had had a chance to say goodbye. She was a special person in my life, one that will keep inspiring me to go out there and pursue my dreams and give back. Thanks Mary Kate. You gave so much, and left such good in the world. Tops.
