Cynthia Baldwin-Thanos Obituary

Cynthia Anna Baldwin-Thanos passed away peacefully on Wednesday. She was beloved by all who encountered her warm and caring spirit.


Cynthia was born in White Plains, NY. She was a life-long learner. She graduated from City College NY with a degree in Education in 1958. In 1967 she obtained a master’s degree in School Counseling from CCNY. In 1991, she graduated with a J.D. from McGeorge School of law.


Cynthia loved to travel. She spent 5 summers in Samos Greece with her family and learned to speak and read Greek. She brought her children to Europe and explored France, Spain, Italy and Greece. Later in life she took an Indian Wildlife safari.


Cynthia became an Orthodox Christian in 1960. Cynthia helped to establish SS Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church of West Nyack NY in 1962. Later in life she became a missionary in Argentina supporting the Orthodox Metropolitanate of Buenos Aires and South America.


Cynthia loved to sing. A natural soprano, she sang the principal roles of Pitti-Sing in "The Mikado" at CCNY in 1955, and of Casilda in "The Gondoliers" in 1956. In later years she was an active member of the Davis Comic Opera Company in California. She played Dame Carruthers in "Yeomen of the Guard" in 1974, Frumah Sarah, in "Fiddler on the Roof" in 1978. Cynthia would have loved to train for the profession of her great great-aunt Lillian Nordica, the Yankee Diva Opera Singer.


Post-retirement interests included verifying her proof of descent from John Howland, a Mayflower passenger, and furthering family tree research on Ancestry.com.


Cynthia is survived by her Son: William Nicholas Thanos of Scotts Valley, CA, and Daughter Evangeline Cecelia Nocco of Palm Beach, FL. She is also survived by Nieces: Amy Littman of NY and Marta Zions of Tampa FL. She had grandchildren Corey Tyler Nocco of NY, Crystal Nicole Thanos of Calgary CN, and Jason William Thanos of Scotts Valley, CA. She had four great-grandchildren: Kai and Kayden Kinjo of Calgary CN and Pearl and Luella Nocco of NY.


Friends and Family are invited to her funeral at Prophet Elias Greek Orthodox Church, 221 Church St, Santa Cruz on August 8, 2026, from 10 am to 11 am, with burial to follow at Santa Cruz Memorial Park, 1927 Ocean St. in Santa Cruz.
