Creator of Opportunity: A Tribute to Kathleen E. Bass

Kathleen E. Bass (née Stenzel), a woman who treated every life—and every dream—as a project of immense importance, passed away at her home in Santa Cruz, California, surrounded by her loved ones on June 16, 2026, at the age of 83. A dedicated educator, a fierce advocate, and a mother who turned modest means into a life of boundless opportunity, she leaves behind a legacy defined by the thousands of lives she helped launch.

Born in Belleville, Illinois, to Ethel and Eugene Stenzel, Kathy was raised within the proud tradition of the German immigrant farmers who shaped the Millstadt and Belleville areas. Her family instilled in her a profound, lifelong passion for education. She went on to earn her bachelor’s degree from the University of Missouri and her Master of Science in Education from Purdue University. During a summer at Indiana Beach, she met the life of the party, Bob Bass, while she was working as a waitress in the roof garden. They married in her hometown of Belleville in 1966.

In her early years as an educator, Kathy taught History and Government at Battle Ground High School before finding her true calling as a Guidance Counselor. She temporarily paused her career to raise her two daughters, Robin and Lindsay. Kathleen believed no goal was out of reach if you put in the work, and she routinely rolled up her sleeves to show her girls they were capable of doing hard things. For Robin, this meant serving as a Girl Scout Troop Leader, helping her third-grade troop make headlines campaigning for the safe return of American hostages, and later inspiring her to organize a petition for an anti-bullying school policy. For Lindsay, it meant a mother who never missed a swim meet, standing on the pool deck through endless weeknights and weekends to back her daughter with her time and unwavering support. She taught both her daughters early on that they were never too young to demand a better world or chase down big dreams.

Kathleen found her true professional home in the halls of Logansport High School in Indiana, serving 25 years as a guidance counselor. She anchored a close-knit guidance department, leaning on her colleagues for support and sharing many a happy hour together. She brought that same fierce dedication to her students: when her student body shifted to include a large migrant farm worker population, she learned conversational Spanish to ensure language would never be a barrier to their success. Her deep commitment was recognized by those who mattered most to her: her students. Over her distinguished 25-year career, she was awarded the "Pillar of the Community" honor by graduating seniors five times—a rare distinction for a counselor, and a testament to a woman who saw the brilliance in every student before they saw it in themselves.

At home, Kathleen was the dedicated guide for her daughters. Through countless garage sales and an unwavering commitment to their dreams, she fueled their paths from rural Indiana to the coast of California, the Great Barrier Reef of Australia, and the historic streets of Italy. She taught them to run toward the world, and thanks to the runway she built, they learned to fly.

In April 2020, as the world slowed down under the onset of the pandemic, Kathleen moved to Santa Cruz to be closer to her daughters. In her later years, her legendary tenacity remained. She walked daily on the trails close to her home and along Santa Cruz’s iconic West Cliff Drive, cultivated a vibrant garden for birds, bees, and butterflies, and actively participated in the senior community at the London Nelson Community Center.

She taught her family that humble beginnings were no limit to the opportunities you could create for yourself through hard work and perseverance. Kathleen will be remembered not for what she accumulated, but for the countless doors she opened for family, friends, and students, and the unwavering belief she held for those who had yet to believe in themselves.

Kathleen was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Mary Ann (Stenzel) Fassett, and her husband of 53 years, Bob Bass. She is survived by her daughters, Robin Bass (Martin Becker) and Lindsay Bass (John Hammond), and her two grandsons, Martin Wolfgang Becker and Maximilian Bear Becker, who carry forward her resilience, her intellect, and her desire to leave things better than they found them.
