Matthew Alexander Steinmetz Obituary

Matthew Alexander Steinmetz passed away peacefully at his home in his beloved Santa Cruz, California, on June 23, 2026, at the age of 60.

Born in London, England, Matt lived a life defined by adventure, friendship, independence, and an unwavering love for the ocean. Santa Cruz was his home for more than 30 years—a beach town he loved deeply and where he truly belonged.

To Matt, surfing was not just a hobby; it was his way of life. Every day, he looked forward to the ocean. The surf challenged him, calmed him, and brought him peace. He was happiest with saltwater beneath him, the Pacific before him, and another wave on the horizon.

Matt believed you could always find fun waves if you knew where to look. That simple philosophy reflected the way he lived his life. No matter the circumstances, he had an eternal optimism and an uncanny ability to find the good in each day. He saw possibilities where others saw obstacles and reminded those around him that the best moments are often waiting just beyond the next set.

Matt had a contagious smile and an outgoing spirit that made people feel welcome. He was generous, loyal, and a great friend to all. Whether sharing a laugh, helping someone in need, or greeting the day with one of his favorite phrases—“Right on!”—Matt brought warmth and authenticity wherever he went.

His love of the outdoors extended beyond surfing. He found joy in nature, beauty in the coastline, and freedom under an open sky. He lived life on his own terms and reminded those around him that happiness is often found in simple moments, good friends, and the rhythm of the sea.

Matt was preceded in death by his father, John Steinmetz. He is survived by his loving mother, Ingeborg Steinmetz; his brothers, Chris Steinmetz (Josie Steinmetz), and Nick Steinmetz; his sister, Gabriella Steinmetz (Brendan Murphy); his nephews, Jack and Kellen Steinmetz; and his nieces, Sophia and Cristina Murphy.

Though his passing leaves an immeasurable void, his family finds comfort knowing he spent his life in the place he loved most, close to the ocean that gave him so much joy.

When the tide rises and the waves break along the Santa Cruz shore, a part of Matt will always be home. Every surfer who paddles out, every sunrise over the Pacific, and every perfect wave will carry his spirit forward.

Until we meet again, ride the eternal waves in peace, Matt.

We love you. We will never forget you.

Right on.
