Dr. Michael Louis Calvisi Obituary

On October 4, Michael Calvisi, beloved professor, researcher, son, brother, uncle and friend, passed away in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He was 55.

Michael spent his childhood with his parents and two brothers in West Bloomfield, Michigan, and later in San Jose, California. Growing up, Michael excelled in math and science and displayed multiple talents, participating in sports, theater and television productions.

Michael earned his Bachelors, Masters, and Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley where he laid the foundation for what would become a distinguished career in fluid dynamics. He completed post doc assignments in Birmingham, UK, and Chicago, Illinois.

Michael made his home in Colorado in 2010, joining the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs (UCCS) as an Assistant Professor, and quickly establishing himself as a passionate scholar and mentor. In recognition of his accomplishments, he earned tenure and promotion to Associate Professor in 2017, a position he held with distinction until his passing. He also received a major National Science Foundation award to study the role of fluid dynamics in biomedicine, further cementing his reputation as a leading researcher in his field. Michael's outstanding contributions were also recognized locally when he was named the UCCS College of Engineering and Applied Science Researcher of the Year (2016–2017). He mentored numerous M.S. and Ph.D. students, instilling in them both technical excellence and a passion for discovery.

Passionate about seeing the world, Mike was well-traveled, having visited several countries in Europe and Asia. He also enjoyed hiking, the outdoors, and music.

Michael is survived by his father and mother, Louis and Nancy, brother Paul, sister-in-law Carla, brother Dan, sister-in-law Nicole, nephew Blake, and niece Marina.

Gone too soon, Michael succumbed after a brave, hard-fought battle with brain and spinal cancer. He is dearly missed by his family, friends, colleagues, and the broader scientific community.
