Yianni Chronopoulos

Obituary of Yianni Chronopoulos

Born in Sparta, Greece, Yianni came to the United States as a young boy, settling in Brooklyn, New York with his family. Surrounded by a family of musicians, he decided to pick up the bouzouki and teach himself how to play the magical instrument. By the time he was in his late teens, he was quite an accomplished musician, traveling throughout the United States for many years, eventually settling down in California. With his bouzouki and music always being his passion, he formed The Spartan Band in the early 80’s. Yianni moved to Santa Cruz in 1982 and was married in 1983. Shortly thereafter he started to work for the Martinelli apple juice company in Watsonville where he was employed for 35 years. Never meeting a stranger, Yianni had a knack for making everyone feel special and loved. He had a repertoire of jokes that his family and friends heard a million times, but laughed every time only because his delivery was funnier than the joke itself. He will be missed each and every day and is survived by his wife, Georgia, children Angela, Paul and John, sisters, Matina and Pauline, brother, Kanello and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to The Prophet Elias Greek Orthodox Church, 223 Church Street, Santa Cruz.
