Obituary of Dean O Burroughs

Dean Otis Burroughs, 81, passed away July 31st at home in La Selva Beach after a battle with a rare lung disease (MAC) which is highly resistant to treatment. Dean was an inspiration to us all: his kind heart, his enthusiasm, and his Midwest-generated practicality will be greatly missed. Born in Le Mars, Iowa January 8, 1937, to Dorothy and Hubert Burroughs, Dean, brother Bert (Hubert) and sister Joan grew up in Sioux City, Iowa. He graduated from Iowa State College (University) in 1958 and received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1962. While at Penn he met his true love, Jane Diane Haas, and they married in 1963. The following years were spent in Internship, Navy service, and a Residency in Pediatrics at the Children's Hospital of Denver. In 1967 Dean joined the practice of Tom Schmida, MD in Aptos, CA. Dean believed it was a pleasure and great honor to have been able to participate in helping provide the babies and children of Santa Cruz County with a good healthy start in life. Dean retired in October 2000. He is survived by his brother Hubert Burroughs, his loving wife, Jane, his most beloved daughters Amy Fabbro, Beth Abidi, Christy Borkowski, Lisa Kim and their husbands; 3 adored granddaughters and 5 treasured grandsons, Exchange Student 1975-76 Britta Borjeson of Gothenburg, Sweden, 2 nieces and 4 nephews. The family would like to thank Dr David Kipps, Dr Stephen Ruoss, Dr Randall Vagelos, the nurses at Dominican Hospital Infusion Center, and the staff at Hospice of Santa Cruz County for their excellent care and support.
