The Man, the Myth, the Legend. Men Wanted to be Him, Women wanted to be with Him. He said!
Raymond Vincent Fassio, a lifelong resident of Santa Cruz, passed away April 11, 2018 after a courageous decade long battle with cancer. Ray was born June 21, 1949 to Lester Ted Fassio and Ione Marie Perez. He grew up looking forward to any outing he could attend with his father and father's friends. With the guidance of his father, he became an avid Hunter, Fisherman and Skin Diver. He carried on the traditions he learned and introduced numerous adults and kids alike to the outdoors. He was quick to invite anyone on camping, diving and fishing trips, and loved the camaraderie and joy it brought.
A native of Santa Cruz, Ray attended and graduated Santa Cruz High in 1968. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served in Vietnam from 1968 - 1970. Upon returning to Santa Cruz, Ray attended Cabrillo College and received a degree of Associate of Arts. He worked multiple jobs from Lumberjack to co-owner of Central County Garbage before settling in a career as an Ironworker and serving 33 years with Ironworkers Local 377, San Francisco.
Ray was known for his endless positive attitude, a Never give up/Never say Whoa attitude and mischievous spirit. He was the buddy you wanted, had the knowledge and tools to accomplish any job and was the guy that would do anything for a deserving person.
He could be found in any group with his bright smile, a glint in his eye and pink hat. He was an active member of the Santa Cruz Archers, Native Sons of California, Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 545 and Scotts Valley Sportsman Club. Throughout his life he made countless friends, becoming permanent hunting, diving and fishing buddies. He touched the live and affected so many. He will forever be loved and missed.
Ray is survived by his wife Zayne Fassio of Santa Cruz, stepmother Gertrude (Trudy) Fassio of Santa Cruz and other family relatives.
There will be no service per his request. A celebration of life and gathering of friends and family will be announced at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, Ray wishes everyone to "hoist one" - Salute.
