Obituary of Louis Edward Wenzel
Please share a memory of Louis to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Louis Edward Wenzel, 90, experienced a colorful adventure in life and then bid adieu at his home in Bonny Doon, CA, on November 23, 2016, surrounded by family and friends. He was born in Chicago, IL on April 22, 1926, the first of 3 children to Louis and Anna (Boenecke) Wenzel. His father, in particular, taught him to love seeing new places, meeting new people, exploring new fields. Lou grew up in Webster Groves, MO, an active member of the Christian Science Church. He graduated from Webster Groves High in 1944, a proud member of their distinguished band, and drafted into the Army upon graduation. After enlisting in the Air Force for the Korean Conflict, he married his first wife, Betty Dickey. After discharge, they continued to live in Florida, where he applied his notable voice in radio, theater and local television, as well as developing his skills in sales and promotions. When his first marriage ended, he hitchhiked to California and made a place for himself in San Francisco. A daughter, Valerie, was born in 1967. In 1970, his happiness doubled when he married Eleanor LePage and gained another daughter, Jeanne. Together they lent their vocal and dramatic talents to numerous community theater productions and community events like the Redwood City 4th of July Parade, as well lifting their voices with the 2nd Church of Christ, Scientist in Palo Alto. Lou and Ellie's dancing brightened many a party. Sadly they lost their beautiful home in La Honda to a landslide; but when they moved near Jeanne in Santa Cruz, they became valued members of the Senior Citizens Opportunities community. Lou and Ellie appeared in many Follies productions and Lou directed some smaller performances. For some years Lou was known as the voice of SCO, announcing upcoming events via local radio.
Lou was preceded in death by his parents, his sister and brother, and his beloved Eleanor. He is survived by his daughters and their husbands, Gregory Lepore and Joseph Schenck; his grandchildren, Nicolo and Sofia Lepore and Martin and Zenas Wenzel-Schenck; his loving and loved caregivers; two nieces; and his cat, Kiki. A private memorial is arranged for family and friends at the family home this Saturday, December 3, 2016 from 2 PM - 5PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Best Friends Animal Society of Utah (http://bestfriends.org/donate/memorials-gifts-and-e-cards), or to your local center for the performing arts.
