Obituary of Orville Elgin Helmle

Please share a memory of Orville to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Orville Elgin Helmle was born on April 23, 1926 in Lodi, CA and passed away on April 12, 2016 also in Lodi. Orville had just recently moved back to Lodi along with his children and was busy unpacking when he became ill. He spent three weeks in Lodi Memorial Hospital and one week at home with 'Ruthie with the assistance of Hospice, when he died peacefully early Tuesday morning. Orville grew up in Lodi. After high school graduation he enlisted in the Navy as opposed to being drafted by the military. He proudly served his country for over two years with pride and commitment. He often spoke about his time in the Navy as a Radarman Second Class, and would tell the family about the beautiful South Sea Islands. Upon returning to Lodi, Orville soon met Astrid (Judy) Kleppe and they were married on February 26, 1949. Shortly after getting married, Orville said he was moving to Santa Cruz to escape the hot summer weather of Lodi. His son, Dennis was born on November 11, 1950 and soon after their daughter, Ruthie was born on April 5, 1957. Orville worked as a commercial fisherman and at the same time building houses. He was a fireman and finally a real estate broker until he retired. Upon retirement he soon became a wood duck carver and pursued this interest along with attending a huge garden. On November 22, 1989 his first grandchild, Kayla, was born. On October 6, Kevin, his second grandchild was born. Orville was very close to his two grandchildren and wanted to see them all of the time. They were the joy of his life and they made his life complete. Orville and Judy attended Twin Lake Church and were active members establishing many great friendships that lasted a lifetime. Orville sang in a men's group called the Harbor Masters and also played his baritone. Orville loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. Upon retiring, he began wood carving and won many ribbons for his birds, including the "best of show." In the later years of life, Orville moved his family back to Lodi. Shortly after, he fell ill. Orville and his family lived a great life in Santa Cruz and just recently celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary. His grandchildren, Kayla and Kevin, were a very important part of his life as were the number of friendships they enjoyed. We will all miss Orville, but we know he is safe and free of pain as he dwells in his heavenly home. We miss you dad. Love, your family. A Graveside Committal Service will be held at Oakwood Memorial Park, 3301 Paul Sweet Rd. in Santa Cruz on Tuesday, April 19, 2016 at 11:00 a.m.
