Obituary of David Stanley Bogaard
Please share a memory of David to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
David Stanley Bogaard, 87, died Thursday, March 31, 2016 at his home in Santa Cruz, California following a brief illness.
He leaves his wife of 62 ½ years, Arden Johnson Bogaard; his five children Barbara VanMaanen (Paul), Brian Bogaard (Christy), Julie Ginader (Stephen), Jane Armstrong (Marc) and Amie Bogaard, as well as 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters Norma Gintert (Roger), Leone Vander Woude and brother Calvin Bogaard. He is preceded in death by his parents, Arie and Gertrude Bogaard, brothers Richard Bogaard, Victor Bogard, Milo Bogaard, and sister Marjorie Duimstra.
David was born on October 30, 1928 in Northwest Iowa, the seventh of eight children. After graduating from Sheldon High School in 1946 he moved to Santa Cruz, California and worked as a carpenter. In 1950 he was drafted and trained for the Korean conflict however remained at Fort Ord, California for his two year service. While serving in the Army, he met Arden Johnson, a Santa Cruz native. They married on June 13, 1953 and established their first home in Capitola.
David started a building construction business in 1975 and although he built homes across greater Santa Cruz, his greatest joy was his commitment to building relationships with people and sharing the love of Jesus. He and Arden were founding members of High Street Community Church and still remain committed to this fellowship of believers.
While life slowed down in 2005 when David was diagnosed with a brain tumor, he continued to reach out and connect with friends everywhere through weekly coffee shop visits, prayer groups and phone calls. He found great joy in collecting strawberries from a farm in Watsonville and then gifting them to friends and neighbors across the county.
Angelito Manubay, his caregiver for over a decade, was his constant companion and friend. We are grateful for his service not only to David but to the entire family.
