Obituary of Sergio Ramon Helgueros

Sergio Ramon Helgueros, age 74, passed away on November 25, 2015 with his wife by his side. He had contracted a blood illness ten days prior. Known to all as "Ramon" or "Raymond", he was born on May 8, 1941 in Mexico, DF to Ramon and Aurora (Ramirez) Helgueros. Aurora moved a young Ramon and his younger sisters Irma and Victoria away from Mexico, DF and to the farming region of Baja California near the Colorado River after the sudden passing of her husband/their father Ramon. There, Aurora remarried and Ramon and his sisters were raised by her, their step-father Francisco Sanchez, and by their uncles (Aurora's brothers) Salvador and Enrique Ramirez. In 1963, Ramon immigrated to the United States and his first employment was at the Tampico Kitchen as a dishwasher. There, he met his future wife Aurora Ramos and they married on August 20, 1966. Ramon went on to work for the Hollins House Restaurant, Pasatiempo and for Schaffer's Tropical Gardens, Capitola before starting up his own business "Ramon's Gardens" in 1976. Ramon was active in the day to day operations until 2012 when a mini-stroke forced his retirement. Ramon is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Aurora (Ramos), his sister Irma and brother in-law Alejandro Rivas of Gainesville, GA, his sister Victoria Helgueros of Aptos, CA, his brother in-law Arturo Ramos and sister-in-law Irene of Kerman, CA, his sister in-law Alicia Velez of Cantua Creek, CA, son Robert Rodriguez of Milwaukee, WI, son Joseph Rodriguez and his wife Patricia of Milwaukee, WI, daughter Sarah Ambriz and her husband Ernesto of Milwaukee, WI, son Albert Rodriguez of Milwaukee, WI, son David Rodriguez of Milwaukee, WI, daughter Peggy Rodriguez of Milwaukee, WI, son Sergio Helgueros Jr and his wife Laura of Ozark, MO, son Andrew Helgueros and girlfriend Erin of Watsonville, CA, daughter Linda Pratt and her husband Jauehe of Santa Cruz, CA and son Arthur Helgueros and his wife Shaine of Santa Cruz, CA. He is also survived by many cousins, nephews, nieces, god children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Santa Cruz Memorial has been entrusted with providing Ramon's services. A gathering of family and friends will take place on Sunday, December 6, 2015 at the Oakwood Chapel , 3301 Paul Sweet Road, starting at 5:00 pm, with the saying of the Rosary starting at 7:00 pm. The memorial mass will take place on Monday, December 7, 2015 starting at 10:30 am at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church. 515 Frederick Street, Santa Cruz, with interment immediately following at Holy Cross Cemetery. After the services, a reception will be held in the Reception Room at the Oakwood Chapel Reception Center. The Family asked that you bring your fond memories of Ramon to the gathering and reception as we will be celebrating Ramon's wonderful life. In lieu of flowers, the family ask that you make a donation to your favorite charity in Ramon's name or do something really nice for someone you do not know in Ramon's memory. The family at this time would like to acknowledge the doctors, nurses and staff at Dominican Hospital for the caring and compassionate help they gave Ramon and his family during his last days of life.
