Hello,
My name is Andrea Salvemini. My husband Jack and I were so sorry to hear of CJ's passing. She was so much fun and a wonderful artist. You might remember the pastels she did of 5 young kids. Those were my grandchildren. In addition she did one for my daughter of her 3 kids and one for my son of his 2 kids. They both loved her work and people still comment on my picture whenever they see it.
Please let your memories of what a great person she was help sustain you and give you peace.
With greatest sympathies,
Andrea and Jack

Cynthia and Evan : I stil can't believe it is true. I always was a fan of Cheryl's. She did portraits of my daughter and my granddaughter in the early 90's. (Carole Stuck). We worked together at the yard in the 80s. I wish I was able to come to her celebration but because of eye issues, I could not make the drive. Maybe you saw my heart at the celebration, because it surely was there. My deepest sympathy to you and the family

Cheryl Myers: An Artists Life
You would think that as a good friend I would be able to recall the first time I met CJ or her art. Well, that is lost in the mists of time. But I remember being in an art store in San Jose when I was first returning to painting. A pretty young blond woman was standing next to me at the pastel counter with a beautiful pastel portrait in hand. I complimented her and said I wished I could paint so beautifully. She said thank you, and told me I could, I just had to KEEP AT IT or something similar. I have no idea what the woman's name was, but I just know it had to have been CJ!
Cheryl was Cheryl but CJ was the artist - that's because back in the late 80s, it was common practice to hide your female gender, as we were under the impression that men earned more respect for their paintings.
CJ loved her pastels. From time to time she would work with oil paints, but always she go back to the pastels. Even out of doors she would take almost her whole set, hard pastels, soft pastels, all arranged on a large board set on a flimsy TV tray - always hoping for no wind. She had her favorite colors and especially she had a favorite paper. How many of you remember listening to her complain that the formula for her beloved Wallis paper had been changed? It is a testament to her dedication that she took the effort to call the manufacturer, complain, accept alternative samples, and finally was delighted when the old paper formula became available again.
As CJ neared retirement she knew exactly how she wanted to spend her retirement. She wanted to paint portraits in pastel! She also wanted to spend time with Bill, and he was taken away from her way too soon. And she wanted to watch her grandson Evan grow into a young man.
CJ was an active and early member of Gallery Morgan Hill, the local artists' cooperative gallery in the Downtown Mall, and served as its Director for two years. She opened her first portrait studio by renting a small space in the back of the Gallery. Then CJ rented the studio across the hallway from the Gallery, a space that was to be her studio until she moved to Rio Vista. For a while she opened a studio in Downtown Rio Vista, but gave that up so that she would have more freedom to travel and paint. She joined a co-op in Walnut Creek and exhibited there until she became ill. She maintained a website and would post and sell her paintings on dailypaintworks.com. She found art groups in the Delta area and did some plein air and life drawing with them, but her closest artist friends were those who she befriended while she maintained her portrait studios in the Downtown Mall. She loved to chat about art and life and her gracious nature made it so easy to be her friend. For many years CJ exhibited in numerous outdoor shows, often sharing her booth with friends. Her charm and humor helped her explain her paintings to her potential clients, many of whom were so enamored of her works that they bought not just one, but multiples.
She brought great professionalism to her pastel portraits, always using top quality materials and keeping her clients happy. She especially enjoyed doing children's portraits, but would groan and feel very stressed when the commission was for a large group of 4 or 5 children in one painting - and well she should, as it is very hard to get that many portraits spot on. Though she would complain, she did it - perfectly.
In recent years she was often asked to give demonstrations of her techniques. She would always be nervous and fret and be sure the demo was not going to be good enough, but you knew that it was going to be excellent and everyone would enjoy it. It is often the sign of an excellent artist to think that "this one is not good enough, the next will have to be better." So it was with CJ and that is how she was able to gain in skill as time marched on. And as she rests now, she must know that indeed, her work, and her life, was much more than "good enough."

Dear Cynthia and Family, I'm very sad to hear of the passing of Cheryl. We worked
together for several years in the Landscape Architecture Section, Architectural Engineering Division. We shared much laughter and many stories when working on projects together. As a technician, she would sometimes say "Tom, do you really want me to draw it this way?" 'Are you sure'? After she left for Muni Water, it was always good to catch-up with her there when working on the golf course project. I was especially surprised and elated to see her at my retirement lunch and later in the year at another co-worker's retirement lunch. We were definitely a close-knit group back then- always the good ol' days. I'm also delighted that she continued to enjoy her art and portrait career after retiring from the City. What talent!!! As another person mentioned on this tribute wall, she had a most memorable laugh that would be impossible to forget. Sure enough!
Thoughts are with you all on this day.

Hey Cynthia:
I was so surprised to learn of your mom's passing. I hadn't seen her for a couple of years, but we still remained friends. I first met her in 1975 when she worked in the old landscaping dept. at the City of San Jose. She was one of the bright lights in my short indoor office career. She always had a smile and kind word to share with everyone. I will picture her painting beautiful rainbows in the heavens. My condolences to you and your family.

Dear Cynthia,
My deepest condolences to you and your family. I met your Mom in 1982 and sat next to her at work for a couple years in the old city hall and later worked with her at Muni Water. Cheryl made me feel very welcome at work and we became good friends over the years. I enjoyed her smile, laughter and many conversations. Cheryl was never at a loss of words and always had something fun to talk about. She did a portrait of my mother, 2 nieces and my nephew. My life was fuller for knowing Cheryl and I will smile whenever I think about her.

Oh my, where do I start. Of course being Cheryl's niece I have so many fond memories.
Her smile will never be forgotten, when she walked into a room her smile lit up the room . She didn't know a stranger, her wit shined through. She loved to dance, no one could keep up with her on the dance floor. Who can forget her laugh , I laugh just thinking about her laugh :grinning:. I can take comfort in knowing that Auntie Cheryl touched the lives of so many through her circle of art friends, co-workers and just everyone that she came into contact with.
Your spirit will live on and I will never look at another painting the same way, you put such life into your paintings / drawings. The sky is your canvas now, I can't wait to see the beautiful sunsets that you will create. Sending hugs to the skies above. You will be forever in our hearts :broken_heart:

Dear Cynthia,
I met your mom shortly after I started working for the City of San Jose. She also worked with my son, Allen Nichols, for several years. What I loved most about her was her sense of humor and her beautiful smile. We were friends on Facebook and I really enjoyed reading her posts about your son and how much enjoyment she got out of spending time with him. I also always enjoyed her postings of her paintings. She was such a talented artist and I loved her work. She was loved by everyone who knew her. My condolences go out to you and all of Cheryl's family and friends. She will truly be missed.

I met Cheryl just one time when she came to share her wonderful artistic talent with the Saratoga Contemporary Artists group in January this year. I am so glad I got a chance to meet and talk to her. Cheryl was so generous and enthusiastic about sharing many techniques and tips she had learned over the years and was a wonderful demonstrator of her pastel work. She was a great inspiration to me as a fairly new pastel painter and I know I will continue to be inspired by her in the coming years. The art community has lost a great treasure.
My condolences go out to Cheryl's family and friends. May her cheerful disposition and beautiful work continue to bring you pleasure and help you through this sad time.
Margaret Magill, Saratoga.

Dear Cynthia:
I'm so sorry for the loss of your mom. She was a gifted artist and a beautiful and loving person inside and out. This morning, I remembered what a fabulous dancer she was, and the evening she was trying to teach us a C/W dance. We were so bad, and she was so patient with us and our giggling. Let me know if I can help in any way.
Love and Peace,
