Carol and I met at Naperville High School when we were seniors- had 2 things in common, our funny Czech last names (Vavruska and Svestka) and we'd both been accepted to Chicago Wesley Memorial Hospital School of Nursing. We decided to be roommates and were assigned 2 other roommates from another small town. So began a close, busy, fun Relationship for our 3 yrs. of nursing school. Carol was the the most serious, the best student, the the most forgiving of our wild antics and one of the funniest people I've ever met. I lost track of my roommates but we're reunited 12 yrs ago, and began visiting each other in Chicago, Wyoming, California and Texas and had so many good times including rafting down the North Platte River (slowly!) and a trip to Yellowstone in a van with plenty of alcohol! When we were with Carol it was as if we'd never been apart. Ken and Carol were so blessed to have each other for so long and their sons and their families, and so many friends, which I'm honored to be one. I'll miss her but know she's where she wanted to be after having fought a courageous fight.
Rest in Peace my friend. I love you.

Uncle Ken, Kenny, Bruce and your families,
God looked around his garden And He found an empty place. He then looked down upon this earth, And saw Carols tired face.
He put his arms around her And lifted her to rest. God's garden must be beautiful He always takes the best.
He knew that she was suffering He knew she was in pain He knew that she would never Get well on earth again.
He saw that the road was getting rough. And the hills were hard to climb, So He closed her weary eyelids And whispered "Peace be thine".
It broke our hearts to lose her But she didn't go alone For part of us went with her That day that God called Carol home
Love and Sypathy,
Russ, Susan & Family

Carol was my assigned roommate with 2 other girls when we started nurses training oh so long ago and so far away. The four of us got to be close friends over the course of the next 3 years of sleeping in the same bedroom in bunk beds and sharing one tiny bathroom. We never fought, occasional disagreements and grumbling about who made too much noise coming in late or getting up to study too early but in general we built good memories and strong friendships. Over the last 52 years we have always shared Christmas letters and kept each other informed as to our family's progress. We had had many phone calls and quite a few mini-reunions starting with the 40th in Chicago at which we shared one of the old apartment rooms in the same hotel that used to be our nurses dorm in training. We always just fell right back in the comfort of each others company. In the last 10 years, we have had roommate reunions in Texas at Lynn's Spirit Ranch, in Wyoming at Karen's house and sight seeing Wyoming and then at Carol and Ken's in Aptos, California. Last year , my husband and I also got to see Carol and Ken on a stop over as we made our way down the Pacific Coast highway. Have so many fond memories of my times with Carol. Not many people are so blessed to have a friend in their lives for that many years. Love you, Carol and am at peace with your new found comfort!

I remember when I was about 7 or 8. We flew into Chicago, and my Auntie Carol picked us up at the airport, & took us back to her house. She made toast, spread something on it (I think it was cream cheese, or sour cream), added bacon, and broiled them for a few minutes. They were good. She said she started making them, because they were fast. I think she was still in nursing school, or was working long hours, & fast was important! Bruce was playing in the living room. I don't remember Ken. I think he maybe was born after this. She was very kind & took time for us out of her busy day.
More recently, she sent us photo albums of family, letters my dad had written from boot camp (he really wanted to make sure they moved the calves from a pasture, & boy do I wish I had his metabolism!), & even newspaper clippings & info about where both of her parents families were from. Auntie Carol & Ken came to my sister, Julies' wedding, & we had a festive evening at the same table. We've been e-mailing for years now, and she's been an inspiration & comfort to me, especially after the loss of my mother to COPD. My heart goes out to her family & friends. I hope they can comfort & support one another with their memories of her.
Love, Linda Vavruska
