Bill was a committed steward of our planet. When we both worked for the County of Santa Cruz, I was the Recycling Coordinator. I sought out an environmentally aware employee in each department to help me promote waste reduction practices. Bill was my guy in Probation, and he enthusiastically fulfilled his role as Recycling Advocate for over a decade. It was an honor to have known Bill.

My condolences to Bill's family. I met Bill years ago at the Youth Garden in Watsonville. It was a volunteer project for Monterey Bay Master Gardeners and the Youth Probation Department. Our youths were doing their court-ordered probation in the garden behind the Court House on Freedom Blvd. One of our favorite activities was making salsa from our own grown tomatoes and building bird houses with recycled fence wood. Bill was great at working with the boys and always wore a smile. Thanks for the memories Bill

To Gabe,
Greg and I were away when your dad passed, Gabe, so we just heard the news. I'm sure you really miss him. My strongest memories of your dad were of ALL the Montessori sporting events we attended! Ever the cheerleader, Bill was always enthusiastic, and not just for you Gabe, but for all your friends too.
Big hug to you and your family and don't be a stranger.
Much love to you ~ Lynn Howerton

Bill, I will miss your smiling face visiting me at the Post Office.
You fought such a good fight. I'll never forget your seriousness when you told me that Hospice "fired me", but that you could rehire them. May you rest in peace my friend.

I am so sorry for thr loss of this lovely man to his family and to his community. I fondly remember finding him at Pete's coffee and sitting down to a lesson in scrabble, which turned out to be a lesson in life.

While I am saddened to hear of the passing of my friend Bill Best, I feel joy for having had the privilege of knowing such a fine man, Bill was one of the strongest persons I have ever met. His will to live was amazing. His battle against cancer epic. Bill stood up for the little guy and fought for the unpopular yet righteous cause. Through his work as a juvenile hall counselor, probation officer, and teacher he helped so many lost individuals find their way. He so dearly loved, and was extremely proud of his family. Bill's enthusiasm and encouragement touched so many of us and he will continue to live on through all of us who connected with him. He will be missed.

Bill was a wonderful man of great vision and strength. I enjoyed working with him on the Watsonville Youth Garden, which still grows under the auspices of the Monterey Bay Master Gardeners. He always had a smile, even in darker times. I know he will be missed.

I'm sadden to hear that Bill has passed away. My deepest thoughts and prayers to his sons, who I know he loved. I was one of those youths years ago that had the joy and pain to have Bill as my probatiom officer. I started off in juvenile hall and landed in the pvpsa program and drug court. I first met him at the hall when he let me know how angry my mother was but told me "I see potential in you. You are smart. I will help you!" And he did! I completed the program and as I graduated, he retired. I was among some of the few kids he had in his last case load. I will forever remember Bill Best as a life changer in my life and his bikes. Bike pictures all over his office in the juvenile probatiom department in Watsonville. We lost a great man!
