Obituary of Phyllis Austin

Phyllis "Bunka" Austin was born August 24, 1924 to Peter and Filomenia Morenzoni in a small hospital in French Camp, near Stockton, CA. She attended school and graduated from Stockton High School in 1943, then worked as a clerk at the Stockton Shipyards where she met the love of her life, Jerome Austin. They married in 1944. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Pasadena then Arcadia, CA. They had 3 boys: Jerry, Gary and Peter Austin. In 1961 Phyllis and her boys moved to Santa Cruz to live near her sister Marian Hough. As a single mom she devoted her every day to being an involved and dedicated mother to her 3 sons until their adulthood when they left her household. She worked in an administrative position at Santa Cruz Dominican Hospital, retiring after 27 years of service. She was an avid Bridge player and enjoyed her Bridge Club. As a devout Catholic, she prayed the rosary daily in adoration to our Blessed Mother Mary, and offered her prayers up for all her deceased family and friends, reciting each name beforehand. Her door was always open to her sons' friends, visiting grandchildren, nieces and nephews and later years to her great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents; her brothers Ralph Morenzoni and Fred Morenzone, sisters Adelia Nickley, Genevieve Mudgett, and Marian Hough. She is survived by her loving sons Jerry Austin of Huntington Beach, Gary Austin of Santa Cruz, and Pete Austin of Scotts Valley, CA; and her treasured 7 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Services will take place Saturday, January 10, 2015, at 11:00am with a Viewing and Rosary at Oakwood Memorial Chapel, 3301 Paul Sweet Road, Santa Cruz, CA. Immediately following, Phyllis will be laid to rest at Oakwood Memorial Park.
