I miss you, Harriet. I don't think many people had your energy, humor, and creativity... and generosity. You certainly left an indelible mark on downtown, the arts, and many other facets of Santa Cruz. It was great fun working with you on the Art & History Museum fundraising. What a time that was! Almost every time I'm downtown, I think of you.

Dearest John and family,
I am so saddened by the news of Harriet's passing. I was out of town at the time, and when I returned home, I was still not aware of what had happened. It wasn't until just today, when a mutual friend spoke of Harriet, that I learned what I wish was not so.
Harriet and I were not close friends, but we moved in many of the same circles, and she always greeted me with her sweet smile, and a warm hello.
I can not imagine life in Santa Cruz without her - Harriet was such a vital part of our community! She truly cared about so many causes, and jumped in with both feet, lots of enthusiasm, and unending dedication!
Harriet will be greatly missed, but her memory will live on in everyone she touched. We will all carry stories of time spent together - and through these stories, Harriet will always be there!
John, I can't imagine how hard this must be for you and your family - I pray that you find peace and calm, knowing that we are thinking of you, and surrounding you with much
love and care.
I am so sorry for your loss. Please know that I am thinking of you.
All my love,
Diane Grunes

Dear John, Caitlin, Amalia and all the Deck Family,
We at Encompass Community Services (formerly Santa Cruz Community Counseling Center) and CFSC, Inc., our special needs supported housing and program property affiliated corporation, send our deepest condolences to all of you. Harriet was a great supporter of our nonprofit and was instrumental in working with our agency from the very early days in thinking of creative solutions to solve some of our community's greatest challenges - substance use disorder treatment, solutions to end homelessness, securing housing for those challenged by mental health issues or as former foster youth. She will always have a great legacy for the impact she has made throughout our community in human services, the arts, and the environment.
I will really miss seeing Harriet and her wonderful smile at community events and around town. May you find peace and comfort in the days to come.
Warmly,
Carolyn Coleman
Executive Director, Encompass Community Services

Dear John,
I am so sorry about Harriet's death. I'm realizing now that I never really thought it could be possible to lose someone so vital. She was so incredibly thoughtful, central to the important workings of the town, and to the life of her friends. I am fortunate to consider myself among that numerous group. I am going to be at a loss the next time I'm in Santa Cruz, and I truly grieve for you and your family.

Dear John,
My thoughts are with you all at this sad time. Harriet's death seemed so sudden. She was so very vibrant and upbeat. I always looked forward to seeing and talking to both of you at all the Arts events in the Santa Cruz and San Francisco bay areas. She will be greatly missed.
Yours sadly.

To Harriet's Family and close friends,
I was mortified to find out today that Harriet passed away.....I just saw her it seems just a few weeks ago at an Open House on Western Dr and as usual found her to be so lively and passionate. Harriet was truly one of the great ones! I had the pleasure of doing several transactions with her and I always had a good feeling, a smile on my face whenever I was engaged with her, whether it was chit chat or negotiating a tenuous point in a contract.
I will sorely miss her smiling wonderful spirit but at the same time I am so grateful to have known her in the very small way that I did.
Bless you sweet Harriet!
My deepest sympathies to all of her Loved Ones.
Sincerely,
Danny Alvarez

I was saddened to hear of Harriet's death, and surprised as her energy seemed ageless. She was gracious and generous as she helped us sell land many years ago. I will miss waving to each other in the early morning as she and John walk along West Cliff with their dog.

Harriet had it all--humor, heart, happiness. We were truly blessed to know her....and work with her on projects to empower the Homeless and support the Seymour Center at Long Marine Lab at UCSC. Her sense of humor was legion and used to crack me up regularly. We miss her terribly and offer our condolences to John and their family. Rowland and Pat Rebelel

I worked through Harriet to find and build housing for those in need through "Housing for Independent People." It was always a joy to work with Harriet. I always knew that her goal was to help people and make the world a better place. She succeeded and her spirit lives on in all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Harriet was such a part of our community. If she was not in your group doing good deeds she was encouraging others to help. She is one of those persons you will always remember she was part of so much and did so much for others. I do not think I ever heard her say I want you to do this, but rather would you help me do this or that. What a winning approach to making our world a better place.

Made Surya and I were devastated to learn of the loss of Harriet. She was such a powerful influence on our lives, and we made so many friends through her, and enjoyed such good times. Its hard to imagine life in Santa Cruz without her. I have always said she was one of the most intelligent, funny and charming women I have ever known. We are in Bali for next three months working so cannot attend the party and and memorial, but will be there in spirit. Much love and support to her family, especially our dear friend John.
